Action Research Blog

Temporary Action Research Blog

1. Describe in detail the measurement tools you used for Cycle 1 such as quantitative, qualitative or a mixed approach.

The summative data was a mixed approach. A survey was given to assess quantitative data on teachers’ engagement with Google Docs, implementation, the material presented, and the participants’ reactions to the instructional lessons. Pre- and Post-surveys measured the viewers opinions on the ScreenFlow tutorial videos. There were ten questions and the feedback came from the survey and one face-to-face interview with video recording. Overall there were all positive responses. Every participant felt more prepared to implement, facilitate, and encourage students’ use of Google Docs.

I was only able to have one face-to-face and actually video record one participant (qualitative) for feedback on what he thought and how he felt about the tutorials. He said instruction was very clear, he gained valuable knowledge from watching the tutorials, and was very enthusiastic about using this form of communication, and suggested I do more on the collaboration and sharing.

The participants had a few suggestions that would help improve the tutorials. It was said there was not enough stimulation in the tutorials, and thought there should be some subtle background music, something soothing. One suggestion was I make several smaller tutorials, 3-5 minutes each in length, that I inform participants beforehand that it would be better for them to open Google Docs, and walk through it with me for better understanding, and that the video tutorial could be resized to view larger by just clicking on it. Also, be sure to mention it will take them to YouTube, where they can then resize it a second time in full screen mode.

It was also suggested that people are very visual, and if I wanted to draw attention and/or focus peoples attention I could create a background that would capture the visual as well as the audio.

One other question that I still have to research further is: “what do presenters wear in a virtual collegiate environment?”

2. If Cycle 2 is not complete, please talk about what your predictions will be!

As far as my Cycle 2, I have just started my Cycle 2 preparing smaller Screenflow tutorials, and have incorporated the changes that were suggested from my Cycle 1 feedback.

I plan to use the same assessments in Cycle 2, as well as using video to record teachers working on the tutorials within collaboration and sharing.

My prediction is that with all the positive feedback I received from Cycle 1, to incorporate those suggestions as well as some of the strategies and motivational tools I learned in this class, there will be even greater positive responses to the tutorial. I am looking forward to continually finding ways to improve on the training videos, and making it more fun and engaging.

I feel that GSM helped me with my AR because I have never used or even thought about using gaming as an educational tool. GSM has showed me how there are educational benefits through using games in the classroom, and ways to use them to keep participants/students coming back. I now know better skills and concepts that are not as obvious to the eye, and can explain how they teach fine motor, problem-solving, communication skills, money management, diversity, as well as teamwork.

I found this class was very rewarding and necessary.

Flickr is an online photo managing and sharing application, you can make creative projects, organize and tag your photos. Then with the cloud tagging feature, you can see others photos that has been tagged in the same category as your own, and share and use them. You can do this from anywhere in the world, at any time, right from your desktop, camera phone or by email. That in itself is a feature worth talking about.

You can also create groups and discussions boards and this was the most exciting part to me. When we were given the assignment within our group to search and post lesson plans. How fun was that? I now realize the value of social networking. For us as educators connecting students with their learning is essential. Flickr can be used in various ways in education to create slides shows, take virtual field trips, create visual arguments, create flash cards, playing memory games, building a story around an image, brainstorming, communicating, teamwork and so many more engaging ways to have students be creative while having fun at the same time.

Xtranormal is a fun and easy way to make customized movies with what they call Showpaks. The characters look like pinocchio type characters that look as if they are in a time in history or in some type of political or blue collar position. This program is perfect for getting into the minds of a famous person being studied in history or other subjects. You can upload your own photos of famous individuals and use a webcam to add your own voice and lips to that person in the picture.

First you give it a name and then choose the scene, characters and type a script. Load scene through the media tab, then you either use the choices they have or upload/import your own pictures. You customize the angles of the frame sets or you can frame your action by selecting a pre-defined camera shot, making and saving your own setup, or rely on our Magicam option for automatic camera switching. You can also bring your characters to life by drag-and-drop animation system, and multiple pictures in your script or even import personal movies in various formats. It’s as simple as that. Adjust the sound and length, then you just preview your movie. You pictures become characters in the movie.

I can see students of all ages making movies and scripting plays and scene in history for essays, reports and customized presentations. They can be any length, online or on-screen, and private and public. It’s up to you and it is easy to do.

Aviary is a suite of powerful editing tools that has creative applications and you can be used from anywhere in the world, right over the Internet. “It makes creation accessible to artists of all genres, from graphic design to audio editing.” (2010, Aviary)

The solutions are endless. You can design and manipulate images and audio. Creating or just changing logos, web templates, filters, color palettes, screen capture and more at Aviary is a cinch. From basic image retouching to complex effects they have Phoenix Image Editor, Peacock-effects Editor, Myna-Audio Editor, Toucan-Color Editor, Raven-Vector Editor and Falcon-Image Markup tools that delivers the key features of a desktop image editor with the simplicity and accessibility of a web-based applications. Enhancing saturation, casting shadows, cooring line art, compositional cropping, and enhancing eyes are just a few of the tools Aviary offer. Then there are distortion tools that allow you to scale and skew images to fit perspective backgrounds for advertisements. Layering, changing hair and nail color in another feature that can be done in one minute, without having to leave your computer. Can turn a photo of a house from daytime to night without having to wait 24 hours. Turning an image into a comic strip is also very simple.

There are so many different techniques and possibilities with this Web 2.0 tool, that I had to write about this one. It can be used for marketing your business, especially if your in the entertainment industry, as well as promoting someone else’s business. Presentations, logos, advertisements, whatever, the possibilities can be endless. It can even be used in the classroom on projects you or your students can make, and someone would probably win an award for the things that can be created with this tool. Even if you want to just change your own personal photos of friends and family, and watch their faces when they see the things that can be done with Aviary. The possibilities are endless.

BP2 2010 042GettingStartedwithBlogger

by Louise Cooper

When I first heard about blogging, I thought I would never do that because it was just a new way of picking someone up. Just another type of dating or meeting service.

Until I started this class, I had never even read a blog, and now that I have, It has been several years since blogging started, and I had no idea that there were so many people blogging. Intelligent people, that really has something interesting to talk about.

I was reading a CNN blog “Why would you possibly want to blog” and Adrienne Waldo was discussing how she thought the same thing before she started her own marketing blog, and it took off like a rocket. It helped her with her freelance marketing career. It also discusses how it could help someone just out of school and/or looking for a job. It would be an excellent supplement to a resume. She says; “It serves as a short enhanced writing sample because it allows employers a unique look at your personality in addition to seeing that you can, in fact, write. It also shows that you're tech-savvy and motivated - both extremely important qualities to have in today's job market." (2009, Waldo).

One thing I found I like about blogging is that it’s not formal. It has a friendly, casual style, and you don’t have to be long winded. You can be short and to the point, but it should be useful. The main thing is to provide value to the reader and this will bring him back to your site.

Another thing I learned about blogging is you must decide the purpose of starting a blog, and it won't be an asset to you if it lacks direction and attention.

Now, that I am getting familiar with blogging, I am looking at blogging from another perspective. It’s can be a marketing tool for visibility and staying current in today’s market. “It allows the reader to get to know the blogger and when it's done correctly, the reader will come to know, like and trust the writer of the blog and that's the best basis for interaction and ultimately doing good business” says Addme.com (Newsletter Achieves, 2010).
